Survey: Electronic Cigarette Users Sceptical of Anti-Smoking Claims
Months of defending their product from anti-smoking groups' attacks appears to have made electronic cigarette users sceptical of other anti-smoking claims, according to a survey carried out by electronic cigarette retailer E Cigarette Direct.
59% of non-smokers believe that smokers can harm members of the public just by breathing upon them.
That number shrunk to 29% of smokers - and just 10% of all e-cigarette users.
Those were the findings of a survey carried out by UK-based electronic cigarette retailer, E Cigarette Direct.
"We set out to test Professor Michael Siegel's fear that extreme smoking claims - which he states are not backed up by science - could lead to a loss of trust in the real issue - that smoking tobacco is bad for your health," said James Dunworth, author of the survey.
"Fortunately, most people continue to believe that smoking cigarettes is bad for you - and many non-smokers also believe more outlandish claims."
The same was not true for e-cigarette users.
"The e-cigarette community has been battling ignorance and misinformation for months, and this seems to have lead to a reluctance to accept new smoking claims."
35% of non-smokers accepted the claim that invisible tobacco residue could cause cancer - a number that shrunk to just 5.7% of e-smokers.
And not one electronic cigarette user would accept that e-cigarettes were as, or more, dangerous than tobacco cigarettes.
The full results can be seen here: Smoking Attitudes Survey.
