Prominent Public Health Physicians and Tobacco Researchers Expose Double Standard in the FDA's Recent Study of Electronic Cigarettes and Challenge the FDA's Alarmist Attitude Toward the Devices

BOSTON, July 27 /Standard Newswire/ -- The FDA recently went public with misleading information about the safety of electronic cigarettes and the marketing of the devices, not only using its clout but recruiting other prominent organizations to demonize a product that has great public health benefit potential.

A group of prominent doctors and tobacco researchers, including Dr. Michael Siegel at the Boston University School of Public Health, Dr. Joel Nitzkin of the AAPHP Tobacco Control Task Force, and Dr. Brad Rodu, Endowed Chair, Tobacco Harm Reduction Research University of Louisville, challenge the FDA to provide the full quantitative data of the study upon which the FDA has based its warning against electronic cigarettes. They are concerned that the FDA's disingenuous targeting of electronic cigarettes through a biased presentation of the scientific data has had significant negative impact upon the public perception of electronic cigarettes, when the best available evidence suggests that these have shown that the devices offer great potential to reduce serious health issues among traditional tobacco smokers.

FDA Not Out to Ban Electronic Cigarettes

The FDA doesn't want to ban electronic cigarettes a spokes person has been quoted as saying in the Christian Science Monitor this week. Rather, they would like to give premarket approval and see some sort of data showing the products are safe and effective for their intended use.

"Some of the product information says you can use the e-cigarettes to help quit smoking," says Siobhan DeLancey, a spokeswoman for the FDA. The agency believes the products should be brought to it for premarket approval, and data should be presented showing the product is safe and effective for its intended use.

However, some of the urban legends about the FDA wanting to ban the products are not true, DeLancey says. "What we are saying is for them to be sold, you should be able to evaluate how safe and effective they are – especially if they are a smoking replacement used over several years, perhaps a lifetime," she says.

FDA approved electronic cigarette

So, i'm out hanging on Twitter and I see this twit go by:

Buy the only FDA approved electronic cigarette on the market

Of course I have to go see what this is all about. So, I click through and what do I find on the Elektric Blue website?

The Elektric Blue Electronic Cigarette is FDA Approved as a medical device. This product does contain nicotine which has been proven to be highly addictive. This product may not be used by individuals under the age of 18. (emphasis added)

and it also goes on to say in the bullet list of advantages "Proven to help quit"

Does Elektric Blue have any documentation listed on their site to back up these claims? Of course they don't because they are blatantly FALSE. Lie's I say, all lies!!!!

There are no FDA approved electronic cigarettes and any company that makes such claims really make me angry. They deserve whatever the FDA throws at them.
