Njoy announces discontinuation of flavors and other steps to protect young people

Today Njoy, a leading electronic cigarette manufacturer announced they will be discontinuing the sale of any flavored nicotine cartridges except tobacco and menthol in the US market to bring their offerings in line with the requirements of traditional cigarettes by the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act. They anticipate the new flavor policy to be in full force by spring 2010.

Jack Leadbeater, CEO of Njoy said "Electronic cigarettes represent a smoking alternative for adult committed smokers. We have no interest in marketing or selling our products to underage smokers and have taken numerous steps over the years to prevent youth access to our products. We hope other members of our industry will act responsibly and either follow our lead or innovate even better methods to ensure proper product use.”

The company further outlined the steps they have already taken to discourage the underage use of Electronic Cigarettes, including:

Phillip Morris Negotiating for Rights to Electronic Cigarette

It seems Phillip Morris wants their own electronic cigarette. Philip Morris International, one of the largest tobacco companies in the world reported to have over 15% share of the worldwide cigarette market and operations in 160 countries, is in negotiations with Ruyan Group, the makers of what some call the first ecigarette.

While it's not clear if this is simply a distribution deal or if Ruyan is interested in selling out the rights to their e-cig completely, this could have a huge impact on the electronic cigarette industry. Only time will tell, but it seems the first round of negotiations didn't go so well.

“Ruyan Group said that an agreement between the Company and Philip Morris International Management S.A. could not be reached on matters relating to the co-operation between them on its “electronic cigarettes” by the end of the first and exclusive phase of negotiations.”

Amazon.com Dropping E-Cigarette Sales Action Follows Notice of Potential Legal Liability

The Internet retailer Amazon.com is reportedly moving to stop selling or supporting the sale of e-cigarettes on its huge website. Its action follows receipt of a notice of potential legal liability for facilitating the sale of a product the Food and Drug Administration [FDA] has declared is "illegal."

The FDA also reported that it found deadly toxins and cancer-causing chemicals in the "smoke" produced by e-cigarettes and inhaled by users; an announcement which came as NBC TV Nightly News was about to blow the lid off the agency's refusal to take action, a news report which was to feature public interest law professor John Banzhaf of Action on
Smoking and Health (ASH) and his legal actions aimed at compelling the agency to finally act. www.pr-inside.com/fda-finds-deadly-chemicals-in-e-cigarette-r140 ..

Previously, after receiving a notice of potential legal liability from ASH, PayPal took a similar step, and Facebook has also reportedly banned promotions for e-cigarettes. In other venues, e-cigarettes have already been banned in Australia, Brazil, Canada, Israel, Mexico, and virtually in Oregon, restricted in Finland, Malaysia, and Singapore, threatened with legal action in Connecticut, and are the subject of a major class action law suit.

Press Release e-Cig Blog Posts

Here they go again!

ATLANTA (AP) -- Anti-smoking advocates say they know a way to
help fill the state's $1 billion budget shortfall: hike the tax on
cigarettes by $1.

They'll hold a rally at the state Capitol on Monday to promote
the plan. Among those set to attend is Dr. Len Lichtenfeld, the No. 2 medical officer for the American Cancer Society.

The plan wasn't given much chance of passing when the
legislative session began in January. But the state's steadily
worsening fiscal picture has legislators scrambling for additional
revenue. More than 60 co-sponsors have signed onto the bill in the Georgia House.

Anti Smoking Vaccine gets $10 million and Fast Track Status

Breaking news on the vaccine front!! If I were John Banzhaf I'd be sending out press releases saying "in response to my recent blog posts regarding vaccines, the National Institute of Health announced they are giving a $10 million dollar grant to the developers of NicVAX, the anti smoking vaccine, to fund phase III testing." But I won't.

What is NicVAX? An anti-smoking vaccine?

NicVAX is a new injectable vaccine developed by Nabi biopharmaceuticals of Rockville Md which the FDA has already granted "fast track status" to that researchers claim will help people quit smoking and prevent them from relapsing.

NicVAX has already passed initial regulatory hurdles to show the idea is sound and now move to clinical trials where patients are given six monthly shots. Early results show that smokers using the vaccine had a higher rate of success at abstinence from tobacco than those given the placebo.

E Cigarettes May Be More Effective Than Swine Flu Vaccine?

Ok, so i'm doing a search and what do i see in the News section? "E Cigarettes May Be More Effective Than Swine Flu Vaccine". Now you know I have to read this. What? Talk about outrageous health claims. Holy Swine Flu Batman!

As I expected, this press release published in the Earth Times is referring to the study in 1942 conducted by Dr. Oswald Hope Robertson of the University of Chicago's Billings Hospital. He was studying the effects Propylene Glycol might have as a germicide. It's really a fascinating study which is being pointed at more and more lately by electronic cigarette supporters. While it's old and the FDA probably doesn't consider it valid research and anti smoking activists just roll their eyes, it is interesting to look at. I'll have to do a more in depth analysis of the entire study sometime.

FDA approved electronic cigarette

So, i'm out hanging on Twitter and I see this twit go by:

Buy the only FDA approved electronic cigarette on the market

Of course I have to go see what this is all about. So, I click through and what do I find on the Elektric Blue website?

The Elektric Blue Electronic Cigarette is FDA Approved as a medical device. This product does contain nicotine which has been proven to be highly addictive. This product may not be used by individuals under the age of 18. (emphasis added)

and it also goes on to say in the bullet list of advantages "Proven to help quit"

Does Elektric Blue have any documentation listed on their site to back up these claims? Of course they don't because they are blatantly FALSE. Lie's I say, all lies!!!!

There are no FDA approved electronic cigarettes and any company that makes such claims really make me angry. They deserve whatever the FDA throws at them.
